Nobody Taught Us About Money and That Was Not an Accident

You are not bad with money. You were just never taught.

And before you brush past that sentence let me ask you something. Think back to school. You learned the Pythagorean theorem. You learned how to dissect a frog. You probably memorized the planets in order at least twice. But did anybody sit you down and teach you how to open a bank account? How interest works? What a credit score actually is and why it follows you around like a shadow? How to make a budget when your check is already gone before it hits?

No. They did not.

And that was not an accident.

What They Taught Us Instead

We learned to work. We learned to spend. We learned that money was something grown folks talked about and children stayed out of. In a lot of our homes money was a source of stress, not a tool. It was something that ran out, something people fought about, something you prayed would stretch until the next check.

Nobody handed us a roadmap because nobody handed our mamas one either. And her mama before her. This is not a personal failure. This is a generational pattern that was never meant to be interrupted.

The school system had a whole class period for Shakespeare but not one hour on how compound interest can either build your wealth or bury you in debt. That is not an oversight. That is a choice.

The Shame Is a Trick

Here is what they counted on. That when you got grown and realized you did not know how to manage money you would feel ashamed. That the shame would keep you quiet. That you would not ask questions. That you would not seek help. That you would just keep working and spending and wondering where it all went while somebody else got rich off your confusion.

Credit card companies. Payday loan spots. Overdraft fees. Rent-to-own stores. All of it is built on the assumption that you were never taught better. And they were right about too many of us for too long.

But shame is not your portion anymore. Not here.

You Are Not Behind. You Are Just Starting.

There is no finish line you missed. There is no point of no return. The women who seem to have it all figured out financially did not come out of the womb knowing this stuff — somebody taught them. A parent, a mentor, a class, a book, something. They just got access to information that you did not.

That access starts now.

It does not matter if you are 22 or 42. It does not matter if you have debt or no savings or no idea what a Roth IRA even is. What matters is that you are here, you are reading this, and something in you decided today was the day to stop letting money be a mystery.

That is your glow up starting.

So What Do We Do Now?

We start where we are. Not where we wish we were. Not where somebody else is. Right here, with what we have, with what we know today.

We learn the basics without shame. We ask the questions we were told were dumb. We talk about money out loud because silence is what got us here. We pass what we learn to our daughters, our sisters, our friends, because the cycle breaks with us.
